The New Zealand Institute of Architects‘ (NZIA) Auckland branch announced 44 winning projects at their local awards on 1 May at the ASB Waterfront Theatre. Amongst the winners were three recently completed TSA New Zealand projects:
Commercial Architecture Category Winner – Plant and Food Research, Hamilton Building
On the exterior of this seven-storey laboratory/office block, horizontal spandrels that carried the service ducting were ripped off, to be replaced with a lovely green glazed facade, while retaining the projecting corbels as a nod to the original, and introducing a big new “saddlebag” that now contains the services and hangs over one side of the building. Heritage Architecture Category Winner – Plant and Food Research, Cunningham Building
The Cunningham is a model of restoration: a charming, fully functional and future-proofed mid-century building that staff, clearly, love to hang out in. Read the full story here.
Interior Architecture Category Winner – B:Hive
The B:Hive is a five-storey building housing 800 people working for 100 different companies. The grand unifying factor is the central staircase, a sweeping, curving, magnificently inspirational bright orange ribbon that connects the floors and – at least as important – challenges the building’s occupants every day to be their best creative selves.
